Begin at the beginning

If you've never been to a counsellor before and wonder about what is involved, you might find it helpful to read these facts about the basics of counselling.
  • Counselling is based on respect for your uniqueness and for your life experience. As a counsellor, I will not judge or criticise you. My aim is to help you explore and understand what you're experiencing, so that you will feel less overwhelmed by your feelings and more able to make positive choices which are right for you.
  • Counselling is private and confidential. What we speak about is just between you and me. Very rarely confidentially cannot be kept. If there is a risk of harm to you or someone close to you, then I will explain how others may be involved for safety reasons.
  • Counselling is a committment. After the initial session, if you decide to come on a regular basis, we will look at what you want to achieve and how many sessions to consider. Some people have 6 and that is enough; others continue much longer. It is important to realise that to attend regularly will help you get the best out od your counselling.
  • Counselling may not be for you. Some people find that counselling doesn't work for them. If this is the case, you are,of course, free to end, though it is generally best to talk through your reasons and check out any misunderstandings.

    Frequently asked questions
    1. How long does it take?
Generally we meet once a week for 50minutes. It is not possible to predict the number of sessions but usually we will make a contract for 4 or6 sessions and take it from there.
    2. How much does it cost?
See home page. My rates are very realistic.
    3. What if I want to check out if it is for me?
We can talk in confidence over the phone and you can come for a couple of sessions and see how you feel about it.
    4. What if I am unable to keep an appointment?
Please let me know 24hours before a session if you are unable to attend or you will be charged. If you are late due to circumstances beyond your control, we can talk about it in the session.
    5. Do I have to have a major problem to be in counselling?
No, you can use counselling for personal development, improving confidence, assesrtiveness and selfesteem. You may just want to look at options in your life.
